5–7 days: choose a clear story
A short Vietnam trip becomes much better when you resist trying to see everything. A strong seven-day route might combine Hanoi, Ninh Binh, Ha Long Bay, Da Nang and Hoi An, using a domestic flight to connect north and central Vietnam. Another six-day option is Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta.
8–10 days: add breathing room
With a few extra days you can slow down the transfers, spend a second night in places that deserve it, or add more food, neighbourhood and beach time. This is often the sweet spot for travellers who want variety without moving hotels every night.
10–14 days: north, central and south
Two weeks makes a fuller north-to-south journey realistic. You can include Hanoi and Ninh Binh, an overnight Ha Long Bay cruise, central Vietnam, then continue to Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong. The trip starts to feel connected rather than compressed.
The mistake to avoid
Do not measure a Vietnam itinerary only by the number of famous stops. Internal flights, cruise embarkation times, road journeys and hotel changes all consume real travel time. Fewer bases usually create a better holiday.
A simple decision
If you have one week, choose the regions that matter most. If you have two weeks, connect the country. If you have longer, slow the pace and add places such as Hue, Phong Nha or more time in the countryside.
What to do after you land
Arrive with the basics already decided: connection, a small amount of Vietnamese dong, and the exact airport transfer you will use.
SIM / eSIM
Buy a prepaid SIM on arrival at major airports from Viettel, Vinaphone or Mobifone; passport registration is required. If you prefer an eSIM, install it before departure and keep the activation instructions offline.
Money & cards
ATMs that accept international cards are available outside the arrival gates at major airports. Currency-exchange counters are also available before the exit gates. For larger exchanges later, use banks, hotels or established counters in major tourist areas.
Airport taxi / transfer
At Hanoi (HAN), Ho Chi Minh City (SGN) and Da Nang (DAD), use the official taxi queue, your arranged transfer, or the designated ride-hailing pickup for your app. Ignore unsolicited offers inside the terminal and keep your hotel address saved in Vietnamese.
Your first 15 minutes
Connect your phone, withdraw or exchange enough VND for the first day, confirm the correct pickup point in Grab or with your driver, then message your hotel once you are in the car.
