Before you go
Maldives Immigration grants tourist visa on arrival subject to entry requirements. Complete the Traveller Declaration within the official window, keep your confirmed accommodation and return/onward travel details ready, and verify the transfer arrangement with your hotel before flying.
Your first hour after landing
After immigration and baggage, follow your hotel/resort representative or transfer instructions. Do not assume you can simply take a taxi to your island: most stays require a coordinated speedboat, seaplane or domestic flight connection.
SIM, eSIM and connectivity
Mobile data is useful at the airport and on local islands. Resort Wi-Fi quality varies. If staying on a local island or travelling independently, an eSIM or local SIM gives you more freedom for messaging, maps and transfer updates.
Money and payments
USD is commonly used in tourism, while Maldivian rufiyaa is useful for local-island purchases. Resorts generally operate cashless or charge to the room; local businesses vary. Carry a backup card and only modest cash.
Transfers are part of the itinerary
Speedboat islands are usually the simplest. Farther resorts may use seaplanes or domestic flights plus a boat, and transfer times can depend on daylight, airline schedules, weather and combined passenger movements. Treat the transfer as a real part of your travel day.
Weather and what to pack
The Maldives is warm year-round, with wetter and drier patterns rather than four traditional seasons. Pack light clothing, strong sun protection, reef-safe travel habits and a light cover for boats, rain or air-conditioned spaces.
Resort islands vs local islands
Resort islands and inhabited local islands have different rules and atmosphere. On local islands, dress modestly away from designated bikini beaches and respect local Muslim customs. Alcohol is generally confined to licensed resort/tourism settings.
