Check the official Vietnam immigration/e-visa portal for the entry rule that applies to your passport before you book non-refundable travel. Save your first hotel address, return/onward details and travel insurance information offline.
Your first hour after landing
Connect your phone first, then arrange a modest amount of local cash and confirm your transfer or ride-hailing pickup point. Airport Wi-Fi is useful, but having your own data makes navigation and messaging much easier.
SIM, eSIM and useful apps
For most travellers, an eSIM installed before departure is the simplest start. If you prefer a physical SIM, buy from an official counter or recognised operator. Keep your hotel address available in Vietnamese for drivers.
Money and payments
Use cards at hotels, established restaurants and larger shops where accepted, but do not rely on one payment method. Carry some Vietnamese dong for markets, small eateries, tips or places where foreign cards are inconvenient.
Getting around
In Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, app-based cars or motorbike rides are often easier than negotiating on the street. For multi-city itineraries, compare domestic flights, rail and private transfers by total travel time, not only ticket price.
Weather, pacing and what to pack
There is no single “best weather” for the whole country. North, central and southern Vietnam can have different conditions in the same month. Pack light layers, breathable clothing, rain protection and comfortable footwear.
Local habits and food
Street food is part of the experience, but choose busy stalls with good turnover and drink safe water. Dress respectfully at temples and religious sites, and allow extra time for traffic in large cities.
