Start with Kuala Lumpur
Kuala Lumpur gives first-time visitors the strongest introduction to modern Malaysia: Petronas views, markets, temples, shopping and a broad food scene. Two or three nights gives you time to see the city without using it only as an airport stop.
Choose Malacca for history
Tourism Malaysia highlights Melaka’s Dutch Square, A Famosa, St Paul’s Hill, Jonker Street and Peranakan heritage. It works well as a day trip from Kuala Lumpur, but an overnight stay gives the old city more atmosphere after day visitors leave.
Choose Genting for a different pace
Genting Highlands is an easy contrast to Kuala Lumpur, especially if you want cooler mountain air, a cable-car ride and entertainment rather than another heritage city.
Can you do both?
Yes. With four to six days in Malaysia, you can use Kuala Lumpur as the main base and add both Malacca and Genting. If Malaysia is part of a Singapore combination, keep the route tighter so you are not spending too much time changing hotels.
Which suits you?
Choose Malacca for culture, architecture and food. Choose Genting for scenery and entertainment. Choose both if you have enough time to keep Kuala Lumpur relaxed.
What to do after you land
At KLIA, do three things in order: get connected, get enough Malaysian ringgit for small expenses, then choose between the official airport taxi system, e-hailing or KLIA Ekspres.
SIM / eSIM
Tourist prepaid SIMs are easy to buy at Malaysian airports and require passport/ID registration. If you use eSIM, install it before departure so Grab and maps work immediately after landing.
Money & cards
Use airport ATMs or licensed exchange counters for your first MYR. For larger cash exchanges later, compare licensed money changers in central Kuala Lumpur rather than exchanging your full trip budget at the airport.
Airport taxi / transfer
KLIA Terminal 1 has official Coupon Taxi (fixed fare paid before travel) and Metered Taxi services arranged at official counters in the arrival/baggage-reclaim areas. E-hailing also uses designated airport pickup lanes at both terminals; confirm the exact zone in your app.
Your first 15 minutes
Connect your phone, withdraw a modest amount of MYR, open Grab if using e-hailing, and confirm whether KLIA Ekspres or a road transfer is faster for your hotel location and arrival time.
